Generally thought of as one of the best grapes for white wine. Widely grown from northern to central Portugal, Arinto reigns supreme in the wine regions of Beiras and Estremeadura, notably Bairrada and Bucelas. Arinto makes dry, tangy wines with steely and refreshing acidity, plenty of citrus fruit that age well and gains complexity with age. Used widely in Bairrada for making sparkling (espumante) wines and is often fermented in oak and treated something like a Chardonnay substitute.
Also known as Pedernã in the Vinho Verde region and Cerceal in Dão.
