Tinto Cão was called the ‘dog’ because of its poor yields and truculent behavior. It is one of the best grape varieties in central and northern Portugal where it is one of the five recommended Douro grapes, used more for ports than table wines. It is late-ripening, but resists mildrew and rot owing to its thick skins, to give dense, structured wines.
