The king of Portuguese grapes is also the most highly prized grape in the Douro (port production) and Dão. In the past twenty years its reputation has been transformed by the view that it also Portugal’s most important table wine grape; attempts have been made to plant in every region from the Algarve to the Minho. Interest has also come from aboard; Spain has planted the grape, as have countries looking to produce their own port. A grape that provides wine with richness in colour, its aroma can be a complex mix of raspberries, blackberries, sloes, herbs, flowers and liquorice. Tones of violets and pine are also present and the wine has a great ability to age well.
