Bairrada is the heartland of Portugal, occupying the central part of the country with vast land of forests and areas of agricultural smallholdings. The name of ‘Bairrada’ is said to of originated from the word ‘barro’ (clay), referring to the clayey soil of the region. In 1979 Bairrada was classified as an ancient vineyard region which lends to the range of wines produced to suit every palate. Cereals, beans and vines thrive in between clumps of eucalyptus on the varied landscape.
Bairrada’s uniqueness is that one grape dominates the wine production. Over 80% of the wines are red and are made principally from the Baga vine. In a good harvest, wines from Baga hold a deep ruby colour, high acidity and a fiercely tannic character, requiring full ripeness when picked. Touriga Nacional and Merlot help to add softness and fruitiness. White grapes, mostly Maria Gomes and Bical are grown to produce traditional method sparkling wines known as ‘Espumante’.
