Douro
The meandering Douro River, sculptured terraced hillsides and sparse, solid, whitewashed quintas make the Douro one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world. The soil is dominated by schist. Hemmed in by granite, this schist runs either side of the river for nearly 100km from the Spanish frontier to the West. For over 300 years, the region’s recognition has rested upon its fortified wine, Port. Times are changing, and still table wines, especially modern reds, are often ranked among Portugal’s finest. They range from being relatively light, lively and fruity to deep, dark, concentrated and full-flavoured.
The grape varieties used in making DOC Douro wines are similar to those used to produce Port and include Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz. Douro whites are elegant and complex.
