Portugal’s northernmost wine region is cool and moist, green and fertile. It can be guaranteed to rain here on and off all year round yet the summers can be fiercely hot. The region is one great granite plateau so it’s of no surprise that the soil is formed mainly of schist, granite and slate. Vinho verde is home to the great speciality of ‘green wine.’ The wines are crisp, fresh and aromatic and are best drunk whilst maintaining their youthful character. Vineyards have been enhanced through replanting and restructuring and the wine growers have learnt how to get the most from the vines and work with the diversity they present.
Grape varieties of Alvarinho and Loureiro dominate but are supported by Arinto, Azal Branco and Trajadura. Principally a summer wine it is now no hardship drinking Vinho verde in the cooler months as well.
