Ribatejo
Situated centrally in Portugal, the Ribatejo region is friendly and rural. The name Ribatejo means ‘bank of the Tejo,’ the River Tagus that runs from Lisbon. Most of the vineyards are on the wide flat river valley, fertile land where all kinds of crops thrive in the rich, alluvial soil. This fertile soil increases yields hence the Ribatejo being known as a region of bulk, inexpensive wines.
The comparatively unsophisticated wines made in the Ribatejo in the past tend to colour people’s attitudes even today, when a good many excellent estates have come to the fore making powerful red and white wines. However, the valley of the Tagus is now a heaven for ambitious young winemakers and radical producers to make exciting and excellent value for money wines. The reds, often tannic when young, develop to become full-bodied, fruity and spicy. Whites are soft, balanced with good fruit structure on the palate.
