Terras do Sado
Since the middle of the nineteenth century, the Setúbal Peninsula has been best known for its sweet, fortified Muscat wines; flourishing in the arid, sandy soils of the region which protrudes out like a spur in the Atlantic. The northern shore of the Setúbal Peninsula can be seen from Lisbon across the River Tagus. The weather tends to be hot on the Peninsula, sub-tropical and Mediterranean and influenced by the unpredictability of the sea. DOC Setúbal and DOC Palmela are the two main appellations; the former is the historic wine of the region; the later, offering more in red and white wines.
Moscatel is the dominate grape variety and Castelão is the red, where the grape ripens more effectively here than anywhere else in Portugal. Two of the best known producers dominent production on the Peninsula, José Maria da Fonseca and Bacalhôa Vinhos, but smaller producers are starting to feature.
